When is root canal treatment required?
The root canal system is at the centre of a tooth and contains the soft pulp tissue which includes the nerves and blood vessels.
Root canal treatment (called Endodontics) is necessary when the nerve of the tooth becomes diseased or infected, the aim being to save the affected tooth.
When a tooth's pulp becomes infected, bacteria will begin to grow within the tooth. This bacterial growth results in pressure being placed on the tooth and causes intense pain.
Symptoms of an infected tooth pulp include:
- Pain when eating or drinking hot food
- Pain when biting or chewing
- A loose tooth
- Swelling of the gum which may lead to an abscess
- A swollen cheek or jaw
- Tooth darkening
If the root canal treatment is not performed, bacteria will eventually destroy the surrounding tissue causing the bone structure around the tooth to weaken and inevitably lead to a tooth loss.
Root canal treatment can save your tooth, restoring harmony within your mouth.

Root canal treatment process
Before having root canal treatment, you'll be given a local anaesthetic by one of our dentists.
The procedure involves removing the tissue in the infected tooth, followed by the tooth being cleaned and filled with a permanent filling or crown. The natural tooth now is left free of infection. This procedure can take between 30 minutes and an hour per tooth.
Root canal treatment aftercare
Although the procedure is pain free, it’s common to feel sore for a few days. This is a normal reaction to the treatment as your body repairs the removed tissue. You can take over the counter painkillers to relieve any pain, and you should return to normality within a week. If any pain or swelling continues after 7 days, please contact out team as soon as possible.

Awesome! Root canal treatment done today. Felt fully at ease. Comprehensively informed of actions being taken by the dentist throughout the appointment. This greatly helped to reassure me. 12 hours later and I feel perfectly OK. Absolutely no pain. I am actually 'looking forward' to Part II of the procedure to be completed later this month. Great experience today. Thank you!

I've been going to this surgery for decades and have only had positive experiences.
This month I needed major work for a cracked tooth and my treatment could not have been any better.
From the diagnosis of why my tooth was sensitive to cold to the root canal treatment and fitting of the crown, every aspect of my sessions was painless, easy and planned around my schedule. All the staff are friendly and helpful. I can wholeheartedly recommend this surgery.
