How botulinum toxin can ease an overworked masseter, the chewing muscle, and the pain and tension around the jaw that comes with it.
Key points
- The masseter runs from the cheekbone to the jaw and does the work when we chew and bite.
- Some people overwork it, causing pain and tension in the muscle or the jaw joint.
- Botulinum toxin can reduce the force the muscle puts through the jaw.
- For some patients it also softens a very angular jawline.

Hello, this is Ian Davis from BDS Dental, and I wanted to continue our videos on dental topics.
Today I wanted to talk about botulinum toxin, otherwise known as Botox to many people. Botulinum toxin can be used in dentistry in a very effective way, to treat a particular muscle of the face. It's called the masseter muscle, which goes from the middle of the face all the way down to the jaw, and it's the muscle that we use when we chew and when we bite together.
But one of the problems is that some people engage it too much, which can create stress and pain around the muscle or around the jaw joint. Botulinum toxin can very effectively reduce the amount of stress and strength that is put through the muscle, and many people find it very effective in reducing pain and tension around the face. We've done it many times, and we have found it very effective in doing so.

In addition, another benefit is that some people end up with a more angular face, which they don't like aesthetically, and it can create a softer profile, which they prefer.
